What types of investments are financial planners NOT able to help you with?
Property
As we know, when we say property, we mean bricks and mortar. Examples include a home, townhouse, or commercial property. Financial planners do not advise on these sorts of investments unless they have specific qualifications. They can give you generic and general information about the pros and cons of these investments but are not the best person to speak to if this is your question.
Like shares, property is seen as a growth investment as the value may rise and income can also come from rent/ lease payments.
We have had recent booms in property prices, however, a price increase is not guaranteed and it can be difficult to sell the property quickly if you need to free up money.
Bitcoin or CryptoCurrency
What is Crypto?
A digital currency that was popularised in the early 2000s in which transactions are verified and records maintained by a decentralized system (not a bank or government) using cryptography.
Planners do not do Cryptocurrency. There are a couple of planners who are starting to take this on as a product that they recommend. Again, just like a property, while a planner may be able to give you general information about CryptoCurrency, they are typically not qualified to advise on these products.
How can I save Tax on My Investment?
Can planners help with tax and accounting needs?
Unless a financial planner has appropriate tax and accounting qualifications and authorisations, they may not be qualified or authorised to give you advice on if an investment is tax effective or not. They may be able to talk generically and generally about the potential tax savings or some investments, however.
This doesn’t mean they don’t or won’t offer investments that may help you with your tax efficiency and effectiveness. Quite often, the amount you invest to use a financial planner may be offset by better returns, better tax savings or better Centrelink benefits that you wouldn’t have received had you not engaged them.
